4-H is the nation’s largest youth development and empowerment organization, reaching more than 7 million 4-H youth in urban neighborhoods, suburban schoolyards and rural farming communities. Fueled by university-backed curriculum, 4-H youth engage in hands-on learning activities in the areas of science, healthy living, and food security.
4-H in California
Started in 1913, the University of California 4-H Youth Development Program has continued to grow and now includes over 255,000 youth members who are supported by over 17,000 caring and enthusiastic adult volunteers. The 4-H program provides participants with an opportunity to develop strong, positive relationships with adults while engaging in meaningful activities. By placing an emphasis on youth-adult partnerships and experiential learning, both members and volunteers can effectively learn, plan and work together to thrive.
In California, 4-H is administered by the University of California’s Division of Agriculture and Natural Resources, in partnership with the United States Department of Agriculture and local county governments. The program is delivered through 57 UC Cooperative Extension offices that employ some 200 advisors and specialists who live and work in the communities they serve.
4-H in Trinity County
California 4-H is a hands-on learning experience available to all youth ages 5-18 in Trinity County. Members learn valuable life skills while participating in a wide variety of project areas, events and activities. The leadership skills learned in 4-H help youth become the active citizens of tomorrow.
The program serves approximately 100 young people each year in six Community Clubs across Trinity County. Youth are guided as they work on their projects by caring, trained adult volunteers from the community. These youth-adult partnerships are the basis of success in the 4-H program.
